General description

The UW is one of the world’s preeminent public universities. Ranked No. 7 in the world on the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities rankings, the UW educates more than 54,000 students annually.

The research group of Prof. Turecek is a world-leading group in gas-phase physical organic chemistry and has an expertise in characterization of gas-phase radical species by UV-Vis Photodisociation Action Spectroscopy and DFT calculations. This scientific focus is complementary to the current research in the Laboratory of Structural Biology and Cell Signaling at the Institute of Microbiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences (one of the Implementing partners in MERIT). Turecek group will provide valuable addition to the Institute of Microbiology research in hydroxyl radical footprinting and laser induced top-down mass spectrometry.

Key research infrastructure

  • Prof. Turecek group has proven experiences in building specialized research mass spectrometers for studying transition states, fragmentation pathways, ion-surface interactions and ionization. Currently it operates a modified Bruker amaZon mass spectrometer for tandem MS and UV/Vis photodissociation action spectroscopy with tunable laser setup.
  • The Department of Chemistry provides several state-of-the-art facilities for Mass Spectrometry, NMR, Optical spectrometry, microscopy, X-ray Crystallography, Photonics and well-equipped machine shop.
